Timing Your Ideal Session

When should you plan your Senior Portraits?

Every season offers its own personality, from sun-soaked summer evenings to vibrant fall foliage and even the bold simplicity of winter. The right time depends on your vision, availability, and school deadlines. This section will walk you through what to expect in each season and how far in advance to plan, so you can book with confidence and find the perfect fit for your senior story.

Summer

Warm Light and Endless Style

Summer in Mid‑Michigan means vibrant fields, shady trails, and sandy beaches all within reach. With extra-long days, most session start between 6:00 and 7:00 pm to highlight that flattering, warm glow during golden hour. The warm weather lets you choose any outfit—sundresses, shorts, tank tops, and sandals—without worrying about staying warm, so your style shines through. Those bold summer colors and sun‑lit scenery give your senior portraits instant energy and a relaxed, fun vibe.

Fall

Rich Tones and Cozy Vibes

Michigan’s fall show only lasts a few weeks—leaves start turning in late September, hit peak color by mid‑October, and fade by early November—so these prime dates often fill up fast. Many seniors reserve their spots as early as April or May of their junior year to secure that perfect window. Sessions typically begin between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, when the sun’s slanted rays add warmth and depth to reds, oranges, and golds.

As temperatures dip, layering becomes both practical and stylish. The crunch of leaves underfoot and backlit canopies create natural textures and movement—perfect for portraits that feel cozy, vibrant, and distinctly autumnal.

Winter

Crisp, Clean and Completely Unique

Snow-covered trees, soft light, and a calm, wintry backdrop—winter sessions offer a striking contrast to the warmer months. Whether you're drawn to cozy layers or dramatic neutrals, winter gives your style a chance to shine in a completely different way. With shoots typically scheduled between late morning and early afternoon for the best light, these sessions feel calm, modern, and refreshingly bold.

When Should I reserve my senior session?

The earlier you start planning, the more options you’ll have. Most families start thinking about senior photos toward the end of junior year—researching photographers, narrowing down their style, and deciding which season feels like the best fit. If you’re hoping for a summer or early fall session (June through September), plan to book 4–8 weeks in advance. Sessions during peak fall color—typically mid-October in Mid-Michigan—are always in high demand and often fill by the end of June. Another consideration is your school's yearbook deadlines—these vary wildly from school to school, but most fall between between October and January, which makes August and September especially popular for scheduling.

Locations, Locations, Locations

How do I choose the right spots for my senior session?

Your location sets the tone for your entire session. Whether you imagine golden fields, downtown murals, forest trails, or a peaceful lakeshore, the right setting helps your personality shine. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—your location should reflect you.

We’ll talk through your ideas and vision, and I’ll help you choose a spot that fits your vibe, outfits, and the season. I have a list of favorite go-to locations around Mid-Michigan, but I’m always open to something new if you have a place that’s meaningful to you.

Downtown & Urban Vibes

If you're looking for bold colors, interesting textures, or a modern edge, downtown areas offer plenty of visual variety. Brick walls, alleyways, staircases, painted murals, and industrial buildings can all add personality and energy to your session. Rooftop locations—when available—offer unique angles, sweeping skyline views, and dramatic sunset light that adds a high-impact feel.

Beaches & Lakes

Waterfront sessions bring a relaxed energy and striking backdrops—from soft sandy shores to dramatic sunsets over the lake. Lake Michigan’s beaches offer it all: sweeping views, windswept dune grass, and iconic lighthouses that add a timeless coastal feel. Towns like Grand Haven, Holland, and South Haven are packed with charming photo spots and an easy, laid-back vibe. Whether you're walking the shoreline or capturing golden hour by the lighthouse, these locations create bold, beautiful images that stand out.

Natural Fields & Meadows

Open fields and meadows offer a clean, organic backdrop that lets your personality take center stage. These locations feel timeless and effortlessly beautiful, especially in late summer when the grasses are golden and glowing. Whether you're twirling in the tall grass or framed by wildflowers, these scenes add warmth, movement, and a natural charm to your portraits without any distractions.

Wooded Trails and Parks

Wooded areas and local parks bring texture and depth to your session with layers of trees, filtered light, and quiet walking paths. These spots are perfect for seniors who want something grounded and classic—think sunbeams through the trees, winding trails, and soft green tones that complement almost any outfit. With shade and variety, wooded locations are versatile in any season and offer a calm, down-to-earth feel.

Planning Your Session

Planning your senior session is a collaborative process—I’m here to guide you every step of the way. We start by focusing on your golden hour location—that magical time just before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and flattering. Since many seniors want that signature glow in their photos, choosing this spot first helps us set the tone for the entire session. From there, we build out the rest of your session around that anchor location to select additional locations that offer a variety of backdrops while keeping driving time minimal. The number of locations we include depends on the session package you choose and what feels right for your vision. This approach ensures a smooth, efficient flow that fits your style without feeling rushed.

If you don’t have a defined vision yet, no worries—I typically look for locations around your hometown that offer variety and uniqueness. This often means combining shots in a charming downtown area with urban textures, alongside more open, natural settings like fields or parks. This mix creates a dynamic session that highlights different sides of you while keeping everything convenient and meaningful.

The Experience Matters

What should you expect from your senior session?

From our very first conversation to the moment we wrap up, my goal is to make you feel completely at ease and confident in front of the camera. I’ll provide professional guidance every step of the way—helping you choose outfits, locations, and poses—while always listening to your ideas and inspiration. Together, we’ll craft a session that reflects your personality and vision, blending natural, candid moments with artful direction to create images you’ll treasure long after graduation.

Connection to Confidence

Before your shoot, you’ll complete a quick style questionnaire, and we’ll communicate to explore your interests, outfit ideas, and dream settings. You’re also welcome to send over inspirational images—whether it’s a Pinterest board, Instagram screenshots, or photos you love—to help me understand your vision. These inspo pics guide everything from color palettes to posing styles, ensuring our session feels uniquely yours. This initial collaboration builds rapport early and transforms our time together into a fun, personalized experience rather than just a standard photo shoot.

Settling In Never Felt So Natural

It’s completely normal to feel uncertain before your session—worrying you won't know where to put your hands or that you don’t look good on camera. I start with gentle, confidence‑building prompts like “take a deep breath,” “look this way,” or “walk toward me” to get you moving and comfortable. We’ll laugh, chat about your favorite music or recent adventures, and I’ll demonstrate poses so you can mirror what feels right. My approach turns any nerves into natural, relaxed energy—so you forget about the camera and just enjoy the moment.

Why Families Choose Kayla

Experience That Connects

Before photography, I spent ten years teaching high school—so working with teens isn’t just something I enjoy, it’s something I understand. I know how to read the room, make real connections, and create an experience that feels comfortable from the start—so they can be themselves on camera, naturally. That experience gives me an edge when it comes to capturing portraits that feel honest, confident, and totally true to who they are.

Sessions That Actually Feel Fun

As a mom of four boys who don’t exactly love having their picture taken, I’ve learned how to make sessions easy and low-pressure. I bring energy, patience, and just enough direction to keep things moving without making it feel like a chore. Whether your senior is full of ideas or unsure about being in front of the camera, I meet them where they are—and make sure they walk away feeling seen, heard, and celebrated.

Photos That Feel Personal

Your session is never one-size-fits-all. I take the time to understand your senior’s personality and style, so every photo feels true to them. Whether that means including a favorite car, instrument, uniform, or working to find that perfect location, I’ll help bring their story to life. These aren’t just portraits—they’re a celebration of everything that makes this moment worth remembering.

Details Done Right

Behind every relaxed session is a lot of behind-the-scenes prep—and I’m with you every step of the way. From location planning and outfit guidance to choosing the best timing and route, I make sure every detail is covered so the session flows smoothly and makes the most of your time. That means more variety, less stress, and a final gallery that’s full of personality and purpose.
